Lot Essay

This chest has four equally sized lower drawers, and one shallow upper drawer, all of which have decorative Norwegian 'rosemailing' or, literally, rose painting on their fronts. This form of decoration has close couterparts in the flower painting or 'blomestermalning' from Sweden, in the decorative paintings of Russia and in Pennsylvania Dutch art, but is distinctively different from all of these.
