Lot Essay

The recto of this sheet was page XIX from the sketchbook CP IV; the verso page XX.

The study of a reclining woman to the left, on the verso, is a preparatory sketch for the reclining bather in Cézanne's celebrated 1906 oil painting, Les grandes baigneuses (R 857; W.P. Wilstach Collection, Philadelphia Museum of Art).
