Lot Essay

The recto of this sheet was page XI from the sketchbook CP IV.

This study focusses on the deep gully separating a pine tree from a square-cut rock in the Bibémus quarry near Aix-en-Provence, where Cézanne found inspiration for some of his most impressive compositions. The same motif can be found in R 836 and 838.
