Lot Essay

Renoir's friend Paul Gallimard, the owner of the Théâtre des Variétés in Paris, commissioned the artist to paint a series of oil paintings depicting the classical story of Oedipus and Jocasta, for his residence in Normandy. The present work is a study for this oil, and was executed circa 1895. Gallimard never acquired the paintings and they therefore remained in the artist's studio, together with several related drawings.
