Born in Glasgow, Annie French studied at The Glasgow School of Art under F.H. Newberry. Her book illustrations, greetings-card designs and pen and watercolour compositions on vellum were similar in their art nouveau style to the work of her near contemporary, Jessie Marion King (1879-1949). Annie French took over King's post in the G.S.A. Department of Design in 1909. In 1914 she married the artist George Wooliscroft Rhead (1854-1920) and settled in London.
