Earl Moran was one of the most well-known and prolific 'pin-up' artists during the 1940s to the 1960s, creating fetching portraits of nubile young women that would be used to illustrate men's magazines and calendars. Working in Los Angeles, he often paid up-and-coming starlets to pose for him, and the young Norma Jeane Baker was one of them. She and Moran worked together numerous times between 1946 and 1950; their association resulting in portraits that depicted her as the 'girl next door' type (albeit a very sexy one). According to Moran's wife, this particular painting of the soon-to-be Marilyn Monroe was his favorite so he kept it in his private collection. After Moran's death in 1984, his estate sold the piece to a private buyer who has now consigned it to Christie's.
