WILLIAM CAMERON MENZIES PORTABLE FILM PROJECTOR
1930s
A 35 millimeter 'Motion Picture Portable Projector' owned and used by celebrated Hollywood art director, William Cameron Menzies. Used to view daily rushes of films he was working on, this 1930s-era piece was made by DeVry Chicago, is enclosed within its own case and still contains 2 reels of silent black and white 35mm film which appears to be old newsreel footage. Also included is a photo album filled with dozens of black and white family snapshots of the Menzies family (including some of Ronald Colman and other noted persons), a program from the 1929 film "Camille" signed by Norma Talmadge and a book and letter given to WCM by Jack Preston. Menzies is best remembered for his work on "Gone With The Wind" where he received an honorary Academy Award, but he worked on numerous other films throughout his thirty-plus year career including "The Thief of Bagdad" (1924), "The Son of Sheik" (1926), "Alice in Wonderland" (1933) and "The Pride of the Yankees" (1942) to name a few.
