Lot Essay

The composition is a variant of that known in other tondos from Botticelli's workshop, including that in the Pitti Palace, Florence, and that formerly in the Ricciardi collection, Milan, both of which differ from the present work in their inclusion of an additional angel between the Child and the youthful Baptist.
