Lot Essay

A studio version of the celebrated composition by Jacopo of which three versions exist, datable to circa 1558, in the Galleria dell'Accademia Nazionale di San Luca, Rome, and in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and in the collection of the Duke of Rutland, Belvoir Castle, Leicestershire. The present work derives from the latter version, which is differentiated by minor details such as the position of the dog and sheep, lower right, and the position of the knees of the Angel of the Annunciation.
