Steel watch cases are extremely rare and would have cost more than the gold or silver versions to produce due to the difficulty in forming steel. It is thought that the inlaid decoration on steel may have been influenced by the increasing interest in decorative arts from Japan, where a similar process had been developed over some three hundred years.
