A trompe l'oeil fan, the leaf painted with elegant company including a soldier in a landscape with castle ruins, players from the Commedia dell'Arte including Harlequin pulling Punchinello on a toy horse and girls playing a drum and a hurdy-gurdy, the whole against a trompe l'oeil of lace on a blue ground strewn with flowers, the verso with a gentleman offering a wreath to a lady and with a shepherdess, the ivory sticks carved, pierced and painted with chinoiserie figures in pavilions, ladies, flowers, zig-zagging ribbons and lace - 10½in. (27cm) French, circa 1750 in contemporary shagreen box
