The fantastical European interpretation of Oriental imagery is typified here by this fusion of Chinese and Persian architectural styles. The use of such ornament in shawl design was brought into vogue by Amédée Couder with his design for the 'Isphahan' shawl in 1834 and was a departure from the organic forms prevalent in Kashmiri shawls
