Lot Essay

This painting depicts the HMS Codrington on patrol during World War II. This is one of a series of paintings by Montague Dawson produced during WWII. These paintings were painted on board, in black and white (grisaille) for publication in various magazines, mostly the Sphere. These paintings were based on photographs, drawings, and personal descriptions, and represent some of the momentous happenings of the Royal Navy during this time.
