in 1934 Yankee had been an exceptionally close contender with Enterprise for the right to defend the America's Cup. In 1935, her owner, Gerard B. Lambert raced her across the Atlantic to compete with British boats. The race across was against his other yacht, the shooner Atlantic. She held the record for the fastest crossing ever under sail and Yankee held the record of the fastest time ever made over the America's Cup course. Yankee narrowly beat the schooner and went on to compete against the best of British throughout the season. Her competitors included Astra, Candida, Endeavour, Britannia, Westward and Valsheda.
