The composition, which became known by the title Het Schollenmannetje ('The Little Plaice Man'), was engraved by Cornelis Visscher (1-1662), Jacob Gole (c. 1660-c. 1737) and Peter Schenk (1660-c. 1718), and given the reversal of the composition, it is likely that the present work is taken from one of those derivations.
