Lot Essay

After the prototype of circa 1640 in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence, inv. no. 306, which is thought possibly to have been painted for Giancarlo de' Medici, Rosa's most important patron (see J. Scott, Salvator Rosa - His Life and Times, 1995, pp. 37-8).
