Lot Essay

This uniquely designed dining chair was originally part of the furniture in the 'Fern room' in Melbourne's Cafe Australia. The Cafe and furniture, located at 268-274 Collins Street, Melbourne, was designed by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin in 1915 1916. The design and concept of the Cafe was thought to be one of the most exciting early 20th century interior spaces. The fashionable Cafe was part of Melbourne Society until it was remodelled in 1927 and finally demolished in 1937 to reopen as the Hotel Australia. Few pieces from the Cafe Australia are known to have survived
