William Morris' engineering background was founded in the bicycle and motorbike business in England at the beginning of the last century. Like many other like-minded entrepreneurs, he easily graduated to car manufacture and in 1910 designed a cheap but reliable light car. Two years later the Morris Oxford arrived, so called as Morris had his offices in Oxford and a factory at Cowley also in the English Midlands. The Morris name has been linked to the British motor industry ever since (MG actually stands for Morris Garages).

The 10/4 arrived in the early 1930s when the company offered a range of different models from saloon, special coupe, two seater tourer with dickey (rumble) seat and traveller. As always performance and price were modest and sales were good. The car offered here is actually quite a rare version being the four door, four seat tourer 10/4, which was first registered with the UK number ARE 638 in the English county of Staffordshire in late 1934. The 35 in the chassis number designates it as from the 1935 model year.

The external appearance is all good and typical of its kind, being a nice older car ready for use with a patinated look. The panelwork is all correct and the car has been pleasantly trimmed with red upholstery throughout to complement the paintwork. The mechanical specification can be described as very good since the car had a recent complete mechanical and electrical restoration. In the words of the owner, "it started with a head gasket and ended up a total rebuild!" The work included new tires, wheels, bearings, batteries, wiring loom, brakes, brake cylinders relined in stainless steel, crown wheel and pinion, clutch, valves, pistons, rebuilt shocks, instruments, floor boards, generator, starter and even the dipping headlamp system works as it should. Apart from squeaky brakes due to lack of use, the car is a delight to drive particularly as it has the silent third gear synchro box.

This is a super little British PVT (post-vintage tourer) in our opinion and it is heartening to see it still on the road, particularly in the US.
