1951 FIAT TOPOLINO
Chassis No. 294013
Engine No. 497132
Green with dove grey interior
Engine: four cylinder, overhead valves, 570cc, 16.5bhp at 4,400rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual; Suspension: independent with transverse semi-elliptic leaf spring and wishbones, rear, live axle with quarter-elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: four wheel hydraulic. Left hand drive.
The Fiat 500 Topolino was derived from an economy car design competition launched by Fiat Chairman Senator Giovanni Agnelli in 1933, in which he invited designers from all divisions of the company contribute ideas. In 1934 a winner entry emerged, designed by the talented Dante Giacosa with help from Fiat's aviation people. Underneath the tiny car's charming, windcheating bodyshell was a clever amalgam of conventional and original ideas, beautifully engineered and entirely practical. This car was the mainstay of everyday motoring in Italy and production output was steady. With well-judged restyling to the front and rear and useful improvements such as a built-in heater, the 500 contrived to remain up-to-date season after season. By the post-war years a roll-back fabric roof section, that much-loved feature of the first Topolinos, was still provided. Built in headlamps followed the design trend of other manufacturers and Fiat gave the little Topolino a wider grille in 1949. Even before the end of the model, the 500 had achieved cult status and today good examples are highly prized for their appealing looks and capable manners.
This is a rust free Topolino that has been cosmetically restored by the current owner. All of the brightwork has been replated or polished. The engine bay has been detailed, all instruments have been refurbished and a correct cloth dove grey interior has been fitted along with new rubber mats. The top is new German canvas. Currently California registered, this cute Topolino has benefited from a recent service and the fitment of new tires and is offered in road ready condition.
