Autocar and Motor summed it up beautifully when they described the latest Ferrari Testarossa back in 1988:
It's the key to the Testarossa's enduring appeal, there's nothing quite like a flat 12, either in feel or sound. It combines smoothness and refinement with diamond-hard edge, pulls harder for longer than any turbocharged rival, and possesses a generosity of character that is completely seductive.
The name Ferrari has always been associated with performance and style. In October 1984, at the Paris Salon, the Testarossa created a sensation and was considered to be perhaps the ultimate GT car for road use. The name, which in English translates as 'red head', was borrowed from the Testarossa roadsters of the 1950s, famed not only for their dominant racing success but also for having red painted cylinder heads. The 1980s Testarossa was the replacement for the longstanding BB series. The twelve cylinder Boxer engine was redesigned and retained only the engine displacement of its predecessor, it was was some 20kg lighter than that of the 512 BBi and with the new four valve head engine, performance was improved with reduction in fuel consumption, and power increased by 50bhp. With the influence from Formula One the relocation of the water and oil tanks from the nose of the car to just ahead of the engine helped tremendously. This allowed better weight distribution and more efficient cooling and increased luggage capacity in the front. The radiator grille is in fact retained partly for tradition, but also to cool the front brake discs. The Pininfarina designed body obviously owed much to the aerodynamic engineers to evolve into the stunning sihouette shape, which is unique to the Testarossa.
The car on offer today was purchased by its current owner on January 10th 1989 via official Ferrari dealer, Garage Prominent in Eindhoven from its first owner Mr. W. Hommel. At the time the total mileage was a mere 5,600km. He had acquired it new on the Ferrari stand at the Dutch motorshow at the RAI in Amsterdam. Fully trimmed in red leather (including the headlining) this example also features original twin mirrors, which must make this the one of the first production cars to feature this as it was only introduced for the 1988 model cars (the archive photo of the car at the RAI clearly shows this). Displaying only 28,582km and having been used solely for long touring trips to Switzerland and France, this Testarossa is in superb unmarked condition. A file with all relevant service invoices accompanies the car and from this it should be noted that a full service including the all important fitting of new cambelts was carried out by Forza Service in Oss in January 2002, at a cost of EU3,500. This fine Ferrari with a fully stamped service book and known history deserves close inspection by anyone looking for a superior, low mileage example of the model.
