In 1950 Alfa Romeo comprehensively turned away from the costly, complicated hand-built eight and six-cylindered high performance sports and racing cars that had made their name, The new 1900 was intended for a very different market. To take the company into the second-half of the 20th century it had a lusty four-cylinder engine boasting twin overhead camshafts, like all Alfas before and since, but it was intended for large-scale production. The first 1900 was an unpretentious all-steel four door saloon, but it was soon backed by a profusion of coupes and open spyders on specially developed steel platform chassis. In 1958 the 2000 berlina arrived to supercede the 1900 and it too was offered in coupe and spyder form. The engine was evolved from the earlier model, and there was a new short chassis platform for the high performance versions. Suspension owed much to the smaller-engined Giulietta with its twin wishbone front suspension and carefully controlled lightweight rear axle. There was a five-speed all-synchro gearbox, a feature which perhaps emphasised that the 2000 was staking a claim to a wider market.
The spyder's Touring body was delectable, beautifully finished and equipped, a classic grand tourer for two fortunate occupants in separate, well-shaped front seats with possibly an amenable accommodated behind. The 2000 had its own character. It still offered a 175kph maximum and 0-100 kph in just over 14 seconds, but it could also thread smoothly through crowded city boulevards without any show of temperament.
The Alfa we offer for sale is immaculately presented, having formerly been the subject of a thorough restoration. The paintwork, interior and mechanics are all reported by its owner to be in perfect condition. The car is also sold with its rare additional factory hard top, which has also been restored, and it retains its original period radio.
In the former ownership for 13 years, in recent times it was purchased by the current owner from Italy. The car still has Italian registration as well as current Dutch papers and is still recorded with the Automotoclub Storico Italiano (A.S.I.). A well-presented Alfa spyder, in ready to use order with current A.P.K.
