By the early 1950s Donald Healey had a greatly respected name in the British motor industry. When Leonard Lord, the combative production engineering genius who largely ran the Austin Motor Company let it be known in 1952 that he might be interested in quantity production of a sporting two-seater using as many Austin parts a practicable, Healey was in the front row of the specialist makers who quickly built prototypes. His shapely Healey 100 with four-cylinder Austin engine was just finished in time for an outing to a Belgian autoroute, where it flashed over a measured kilometre at 111 mph before being rushed back to be shown at the London Motor Show.
The two seater went into production as the Austin-Healey, it was a highly successful production sports-car. By 1956 a six cylinder engine Healey was available that superceded the four, this was called the 100/6 BN4 which twelve months later became the BN6 when it was fitted with a new type of six-port cylinder head. There was also a longer wheelbase to accommodate the engine and to make room for a pair of occasional seats. Details such as improved hood and sidescreens, with external door handles, indicated it was a rather more sophisticated automobile. The 100/6 was highly successful on the road and, when in a tuned state, was extremely competitive in the international rally world. The increased interior room appealed particularly to the North American buyers, while the improved hood and side screens were well received by all.
This 100/6 was purchased by the current owner 13 years ago, and has been the subject of a comprehensive and exacting restoration. During this the chassis was galvanised, the bodywork totally rebuilt and repainted in the appropriate livery. The mechanics have been comprehensively overhauled, with the total expenditure for all of this work exceeding EU 50,000 for which invoices are available along with photographs of the rebuild are on file.
The result of the restoration is a simply stunning concours Austin Healey, which has been rarely used since by its owner and always carefully stored and maintained, and as such can be highly recommended. An excellent example, ready to be used and enjoyed for exhibition or on the road.
