Lot Essay

Andrew Johnson designed many posters for the LNER throughout the 1920's and into the 1930's. He created many iconic images and is particularly well know for his depictions of the golfers of North Berwick, as seen in this poster. The vibrant colours utilised by the artist together with the elegant style of the golfers is juxtaposed against the drammatic fairways and scenery of the North Berwick golf courses. In the distance we see Bass rock, off the coast, a famous bird sanctuary known to this day for its wonderful colony of Puffins. Johnson created wonderfully evocative images of these fashionable holiday makers enjoying the most leisurely of sporting pursuits. His posters encoraged travel to the region at a time when foreign holidays were barely thought of and travel within the UK and Ireland by train was affordable to most.
