A PAIR OF ITALIAN BRONZE NEO-CLASSICAL TRIPOD TORCHERES
Attributed to J. Chiurazzi et Fils, Naples, second half 19th century
Each with gadrooned platform with integral light fitting and three hooks above a sphinx seated on an Ionic capital and fluted column, with three shaped shields and three hooks at the mid-point, above an ivy-wreathed shaft, with gadrooned stem and tripod base with anthemia and scrolled panels between the legs, on paw feet with pads, previously gilt with traces of the layer of gilding, lacking one hook, fitted for electricity

The candelabra with sphinx-capped pillars relate to a bronze antiquity found at Herculaneum and exhibited in the Museum at Naples. Replicas of the Herculaneum candelabra feature in the 1910 catalogue of the bronze-founders Messrs J. Chiurazzi & Fils and D. De Angelis & Fils of Naples, no. 73033.
