Attributed to Gillows, early 19th century
With turned handle and a pair of reeded columns flanking a swinging toe-grip above a rounded rectangular platform, inscribed in pencil 'Christopher Wilcock'

Lot Essay

This boot-jack is signed by Christopher Wilcock. Several Wilcocks are recorded in the Gillows' records including 'Crs. Wilcock' who is recorded in 1837 and 1839 and is most probably the same man (The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, p. 973). The quality and use of the reeded column is typical of Gillows' output in the early 19th century.
