A GEORGE III HARDWOOD AND MAHOGANY SECRETAIRE CLOTHES-PRESS
Attributed to Gillows, third quarter 18th century
The rectangular dentilled cornice above a plain frieze and a pair of panelled doors inlaid with ovals enclosing four slides with mahogany fronts, above a drawer with a flap enclosing a green baize-lined writing-surface and a fitted interior of drawers and pigeon-holes, the base with two panelled doors enclosing three slides with mahogany fronts, on bracket feet, the reverse inscribed in chalk 'Mason', restorations to feet

Lot Essay

Gillows' sketch for a related 'Wardrobe with a writing-drawer' dated March 1788 appears in Gillows' Estimate Sketch Book, while similar oval-panelled doors appear on a 'Cabinet or bureau-wardrobe' of the same date (L. Boynton (ed.), Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, nos. 132 and 135).
A similar secretaire-press attributed to Gillows was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 9 July 1999, lot 85 (£18,400).
