Of rectangular form, with three foliate-wreathed X-framed divisions joined by turned baluster stretchers, above a mahogany-lined frieze drawer carved with stylised foliage, with four cone finials, on ring-turned tapering legs, brass caps and castors, the castors stamped 'COPE'S PATENT', the upper half of one wreath replaced

Lot Essay

This canterbury derives from a design by John C. Loudon published in 1833 in his Encyclopaedia of Cottage, Farm and Villa Architecture and Furniture, 1833. A canterbury of the same design was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 25 September 1998, lot 170 and another was sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 23 January 2002, lot 515 ($8,225).
