Lot Essay

The chairs' Grecian-scrolled frames relate to that of 'Trafalgar' chairs published in R. Ackermann's The Repository of Arts, 1811. Their cabled uprights combined with crest rails incised with voluted tablets feature on chairs supplied in 1811 by Gillows for Tatton Park, Cheshire and on dining-chairs that are likely to have been supplied in 1813 by Messrs Tatham and Co. for the Prince Regent, later George IV (N. Goodison and J. Hardy, 'Gillows at Tatton Park', Furniture History, 1970, pls. 9A-B and H. Roberts, For the King's Pleasure, London, 2001, fig. 55).
