Lot Essay
The plinth-supported and boulle-inlaid cabinet is designed in the early l9th century French/antique fashion. Its brass-inlaid frieze is flowered with a palmette issuing from wave-scrolled Roman acanthus. Paired and acanthus-wrapped trusses frame its pilasters which are embellished with golden bas-reliefs of Jupiter's eagle-winged and vivifying fulcrum issuing from poetic palm-flowers.
Two single-trussed cabinets of this pattern were sold in these Rooms, 25 June 1987, lot 110. Another slightly smaller pair was exhibited by Mallett & Son Ltd. at the Grosvenor House Antiques Fair, June 1991. Another related marble-topped cabinet, with paired trusses, was formerly in the collection of Mrs Natalie Barclay of Boxted House, Colchester and was sold at Christie's South Kensington, 3 October 2001, lot 339 (£46,000). Another, or the latter's pair, was sold Sotheby's London, 2 June 2002, lot 186.
