Going Home was painted when the artist was twenty-two years of age and is one of the earliest known extant works by Blackman. Painted at his mother's house in the Sydney suburb of Harbord, the young woman in the painting has been identified as Barbara Patterson, whom Blackman was to marry the following year. The influence of Cezanne upon Blackman is apparent in this work, particularly in his handling of the landscape.
