The collection would be Australian, support and encourage the young and talented, and provide stimulation in the work-place. In the thirty plus years since, many of the artists represented have developed significant reputations and the collection has more than met its original objectives. The individual art works have provided great visual pleasure to many people and it is pleasing to know that they will continue to do so beyond this auction. The collection grew over the years through the addition of works from BHP subsidiaries in Australia and America and further purchases of work chosen to provide greater variety and a broader spread of artistic merit. Most of the works comprising the collection are being provided for this auction. The proceeds will be used to establish a new BHP Billiton collection that reflects both the identity of the merged companies and a contemporary view of our environment. BHP Billiton will maintain its commitment to innovation and excellence in the visual arts. The first BHP collection did its job well. The next collection will take us forward in the new millennium.
