Flood Dear Flood

The artist's works often reflect the life and events of Calcutta where he lives and works. Floods are common in the city during the monsoons. Here, however, the artist has added another layer of meaning by combining human faces with the inanimate stones in the image. By likening humans to soulless and worthless objects, he is reflecting his own disillusionment with the state of society around him.

Bhattacharjee's technical skill imbues the figures in the painting with a wonderful sculptural quality. The mailbox is illustrated with tremendous realism and a skillful use of light and shadow. He breaks the monotony of the mustard tones with bright areas of red, lending a surreal air to the work.
