The Room belongs to a series of nine paintings done for Dodiya's first solo exhibition held in 1989. He uses shadows very effectively in this work. The otherwise gloomy interior of the room is broken by the open doorway, throwing light onto the floor and creating a shadow, and by the wall on the right, reflecting the light slanting in from the small window.
Interesting to note is the absence of a figure in the work. Dodiya did originally plan to include a young boy sitting on the threshold but altered the image in favor of a more stark composition. It lends a static quality to the work and infuses the canvas with a certain degree of tension.
