William Daniell records in his diary entry for 17 May 1792: 'Tutgul & Guggen Gur appeared so very picturesque a mile or two after we left it this morning that we stopped and made Sketches of them. My Uncle rode towards a very singular Rock that appeared to be but a short distance from us, but before he got to it the distance proved to be near three miles. It stands on the West bank of the Pennar River a mile or two to the right of the Darampoury Road [and was] supposed to be abt. 100ft. high.'
