Lot Essay

According to Mildred Archer, an inscription on the old mount (no longer available) reads 'a Chowkeydar resides in the sentry box to protect the waters of the tank from being defiled. The morning assemblage of Bheesties & water carriers of both sexes.'

William Prinsep was a member of the exceptionally gifted Prinsep family. His father was John Prinsep of the East India Company, who has been credited with founding the indigo trade in India. Each of John's seven sons followed him to India, setting themselves up as traders, lawyers or civil servants. William worked in India as a merchant and banker, and, according to a historian of the family 'returned to England with a competency in 1842'. His visual record of his return journey, along the 'Overland route', has become justly famous. The route established a regular system of communication from Britain to Alexandria, across Egypt to the Red Sea, and then on to India.

The Hindu College stands on the north side of College Square in Calcutta. It was built in 1824 and is still standing today.
