6 hand-coloured aquatints by R. Havell after Fraser (each 547 x 770mm), on thick paper, from Fraser's Views in the Himala Mountains, London: Rodwell and Martin, 1820. (Some marginal wear.)

Amateur artist, banker and merchant, Fraser was based in Calcutta from 1813 to 1820. In May 1815 he journeyed into the Garhwal Hills with his brother William, who acted as political agent to General Martindale in the Nepal War. In July Fraser continued on his own and was prompted by the beauty of the landscape to start sketching. 'The Hills with their conifer trees and 'burns' reminded him of his home at Reilig in the Highlands of Scotland' (Archer, India Observed, p.100). Under the guidance of Chinnery and William Havell, Fraser then worked up the drawings on his return to Calcutta in 1816. The beauty of the plates then published by Rodwell and Martin, rivalled those of the Daniells and Henry Salt. Abbey Travel 498, nos. 2, 5, 6, 7, 15 and 17. (6)
