PRINCE ALEKSEI DMITIEVICH SOLTYKOV (1806-1859)
Habitants de l'Inde dessineés d'apreès nature par... Soltykoff lithographiés a deux teintes par J. Trayer. Paris: Félix Maltested et Cie for H. Gache, [n.d but 1853].
2° (524 x 344mm). Title with lithographic vignette Jardins d'Amber près d'Jaipour, list of plates, 42 tinted lithographic plates by J. Trayer after Soltykoff, printed by Plista, Paris, with accompanying text on leaves following each plate (light spotting throughout). Original publisher's boards, the upper cover with lithographic vignette and title, as title page, green cloth spine titled in gilt (extremities worn, some surface abrasion to upper board).
FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE RAREST OF THE ILLUSTRATED BOOKS ON INDIA PUBLISHED IN THE 19TH CENTURY. A fine large scale work with expertly worked insightful portraits from original drawings made by the author. Prince Soltykov, an amateur artist of considerable distinction and immense personal wealth, travelled widely, indulging his interest in the East, collecting Indian and Persian objects and art. He made two journeys to India, recording his observations in the Habitants de l'Inde and in Voyages dans l'Inde, pendant les années 1841-46, published in oblong folio format in 1848. The present work, which complements the Voyages, comprises portraits of the people of India, from the young King of Gwalior to the most poor and deprived. Amongst those depicted are fakirs, Paharis of the Himalaya, women of Bombay, courtesans, dancers, and the 'Rodias' in Kandy. Each plate is accompanied by descriptive text, in which Soltykov records how he encountered his subject, and explains their occupations or origins. The Rodias, for example, are noted to be of mixed race, the descendants of Europeans exiled by the King of Kandy. Graesse VI, p.433 (dated 1853); Brunet V 432.
