Lot Essay

It is probable that the finely attired noblewoman depicted here is meant to be a princess. Her hairstyle and facial features resemble those of her counterpart in A noblewoman smoking a hookah with attendants, in an interior overlooking a garden, lot 117. The Company School artist would often trace his figures from earlier drawings. Elements of this composition are striking and unusual, such as the screen of stylised flowers bordering the terrace.
