Although a number of Kalong dishes painted with this pattern are published, they are not as well painted as the present example, which clearly shows that the broad, black brushstrokes are foliate motifs. More often they appear as less distinctive shapes which are sometimes referred to as 'crows'. See other examples illustrated by R. Brown, The Ceramics of South-east Asia, Oxford, 1988, pl. XXXIXa, by V. Dofflemyer, Southeast Asian Ceramics from the Collection of Margot and Hans Ries, Pacific Asia Museum, 1989, no. 88a, and by K.
