Lot Essay

The poems written at the end of the year on a page that appears to be a diary entry, may be a tribute to the poet Matsuo Basho (1644-1694): Basho sarite sono nochi imada toshi kurezu Buson (Basho has gone but since his death I feel I will never welcome the New Year. Buson)
The poems about old diaries (furugoyomi) and the winter moon (kangetsu) are:

Kita ni muki hito wa mazushiki zukin kana
Namamekite zashi aru sono zukin kana
Toka amari hiyori tsuzukite furugoyomi
Furugoyomi nagashi tomarite Kamiyagawa
Furugoyomi fumuya Mishima no yadohazure
Kangetsuya matsu no ochiba no ishi o ire
Kangetsuya tani o cha ni kumu mine no tera
