Edo-Meiji period (19th century), signed Kaigyoku [Kaigykousai Masatsugu (1813-1892)]
Delicately carved as a boar resting beside rocks and long grasses, the right front leg tucked beneath his chin, the left front leg bent as if ready to prop himself upright, the hair rendered with finely etched lines and the grasses arching over the boar's back and touching only on the far side, the underside carved with a bed of fallen leaves; eyes inlaid in pale orange horn, the pupils in darker horn; signature beneath the rock not within a reserve
