EDO PERIOD (18TH CENTURY)

Noh robes are known for their exceptional beauty and quality of workmanship. The Karaori is one of the most important types of costumes for Noh drama, the stylized traditional theater of Japan. Both the raised and ground patterns are woven with supplementary wefts, creating multicolor brocade that enhances the stage with its luminosity. The floating clouds and wheels representing Buddhist ritual implements are associated with male roles. There are similar robes in the Tokugawa Art Museum, Nagoya.
