A Suit of Armor
Edo period (19th century)
The eight-plate helmet lacquered black and applied with fukurin (rolled metal edging) along the back of each flange and with two shinodare (decorative strips at the front of the bowl) carved with vines, the top of the bowl fitted with a four-stage tehen kanamono (decorative ring), the helmet peak applied with printed leather and a large kuwagata-dai (forecrest mount) carved with chrysanthemums and kuwagata (decorative horns) and a forecrest in the form of a circular family crest, the fukigaeshi (turnbacks) applied with printed leather and mounted with the family crest medallions, the edges laced in orange, the helmet with a four-lame solid neck guard laced in orange and with fittings carved with chrysanthemums on the lowest lame; the face mask with a detachable nose and lacquered black with silver teeth and an applied moustache and fitted with a four-lame throat guard; the solid two-plate cuirass lacquered black with a gold family crest and fitted with seven sections of tasses; the o-sode (large shoulder guards) laced in orange and white and decorated on the bottom lame with a gilt-metal ornament carved with chysanthemums; sleeves, thigh guards and shin guards all laced and lacquered to match; wood box of later construction
