SWEDISH GREENLAND EXPEDITION, 1883
Lafontaine, Paris (maker). A pocket barometer, the silver case inscribed on the reverse 'A.E. NORDENSKIÖLD/Exploration de L'Intérieur/du Groenland/1883', the winding button incorporating a compass, in burgundy velvet and silk lined leather case.
The Swedish exploring and scientific expedition set out in the Sofia from Göteborg in May 1883, sponsored by Oscar Dickinson and the Swedish Government to determine whether the Greenland ice cap covered the whole of the interior and to conduct various scientific studies. Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld and a party of nine ascended the ice cap by way of a glacier at the head of Tassiussarssuag fjord in July (the glacier now named Nordenskiölds Gletscher), covering 117km. inland and two members of the party continuing on 230km. and reaching an altitude of 1,947 metres. The expedition returned to Göteborg in September. Nils Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld (1832-1901) was a geologist and leader of numerous Swedish exploring expeditions from the 1860s. The 1883 Greenland expedition, of which the present barometer is a relic, was his last.
