NATIONAL ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION, 1901-1904
A wooden trinket or letter box, 9 x 7½ x 3½in. (23 x 19 x 9cm.) incorporating a top panel of oak 7 x 5½in. (18 x 17cm.) inscribed in ink on the underside 'this piece of oak in the top of this box is from the broken Rudder of the Antarctic Ship Discovery, which was broken when being freed from the ice by the "Morning" & "Terra Nova" at the South Pole February 1904. The piece of Oak was given by Capt Scott of the "Discovery" to Mr J.J. Kinsey and by Mr Kinsey to J.H. Fisher. With love to Gladys from her father on her 15th birthday August 30th 1904 JHF "Miowera" Lower Riccarton Ch ch N.Z.'
