Armitage (1869-1910), an Australian Boer War veteran, joined the Nimrod from a deer-stalking expedition to New Zealand to take charge of the ponies. With Mawson, David and Cotton he joined the Australian contingent which Shackleton had deliberately recruited en route as he sought funds from the Australian government to support the expedition. Armitage led the Western Geological Party on the expedition. He committed suicide in Melbourne in 1910.
