Lot Essay

With this design, Knox is a 'time traveler'. The expression 'Machine Age' (ca 1935 America) comes to mind with these candlesticks that most definitely resemble 'pistons'. At the same time as abstracting form to its machine like essence, they also are similar in conception to his 'Great Clocks' (see lots 150 & 155) with their reliance on the soft surface sheen of the pewter for decorative power.

Another example of this design was sold at Christie's New York on 11 June 1999, lot 358.
