Tommy Taylor was born in Barnsley on 29th January 1932. He joined his local side Barnsley FC in 1949 and subsequently joined Manchester United in 1953. He gained the first of 19 appearances for England against Argentina in the infamous abandoned match in Buenos Aires, also in 1953. As part of the famous Busby Babes, his goal scoring achievements with United and England had many people comparing him to the legendary Tommy Lawton.
Tragically in February 1958 and at the height of his International and Domestic career he lost his life along with many of his colleagues in the Munich Air Disaster.
Prior to this tragedy, Taylor had been a United stalwart and made almost 190 appearances for 'The Reds', scoring a phenomenal 128 goals. Taylor's goal-scoring record for England was even better, with 16 goals, including two hat-tricks in just 19 matches. Honours won with United, include the Division 1 Championships in 1956 and 1957 (see lot 1). He also scored in the 1957 F.A.Cup final when United were defeated 2-1 by Aston Villa (see lots 2 and 3).
