The title of the exhibition in which this sculpture featured gives a clue to its purpos, Ozjets d'Art -- an exhibition set up in order to raise funds for the Oz obscenity trials in April 1971. The trial of the editors of the British Underground paper Oz, Richard Neville, Jim Anderson and Felix Dennis, became a cause celebre. They faced prosecution due to the publication of Issue 28, known as the 'Schoolkids Oz', which contained material allegedly likely to corrupt minors. As a regular reader of the magazine, Lennon took up the editors' cause. Other artistic contributors to the exhibition included: Richard Hamilton, David Hockney, David Bailey, Martin Sharp, Yoko Ono, Felix Topolski, Gerald Scarfe, Andy Warhol, Alan Aldridge and Ralph Steadman.
John and Yoko also composed and produced the single God Save Us Do The Oz released on Apple by the Elastic Oz Band in July 1971 to raise money and support for the Oz editors.
