Somersetensem, Comitat. Cagri fertilitate Celebrem hec ob oculos ponit Tabula, [London:] 1575 [but 1579]. Handcoloured engraved map of Somerset, elaborate title cartouche surmounted by Royal coat-of-arms and cherubs supporting drapery above, galleons and sea monster (some light browning mainly at lower left corner), 390 x 510mm., framed and glazed.
Moreland & Bannister on Saxton's Atlas: "On completion of each county survey the maps were printed and sold separately ... the complete atlas which eventually appeared in 1579 being the first printed set of county maps and one of the first national atlases produced anywhere. It was soon recognised as a work of major importance ..."
